ResearchBuzz -- Internet Research News and Information: "Index of E-Books Available Online
There's a huge index of over 73,000 English-language book texts available at http://www.digitalbookindex.com/ . There's a semi-registration required to use this site.
The actual search page for this resource is at http://www.digitalbookindex.com/search001a.htm , but before you get to that you'll have to login at http://www.digitalbookindex.com/logina.htm . Logging in requires your name, org, and e-mail address. Be sure to click the checkbox to opt OUT of e-mail from this company--otherwise you're automatically opted in. (ugh.)
Once you're logged in, you'll have several search and browsing options. Search options include author, title, or author and title. Browse options include subjects, author's list (authors are broken out more or less geographically), publishers, and Dewey.
A search for 'Hemingway' found over two dozen results. Search results include author, title, edition, format, price (in this case two items were free) and the publishing organization. Formats here include HTML, text, NetLibrary, and Adobe eBook.)
In addition to the listings of books, the site has several links to ebook readers, information for librarians, and information for publishers. "

ResearchBuzz! -- Search engine news and information.: "Fagan Releases Translation Tool
Tired of visiting all the online translation sites to find the one you need? Michael Fagan's Translation Wizard gathers up over 40 tools and puts them all together through one interface. It's available at http://www.faganfinder.com/translate/ .
If you've ever used Babelfish or Google's translator this will look familiar to you. Enter text or an URL choose the languages (the languages go from Afrikaans to Yiddish and include Arabic and traditional and simplified Chinese) and choose translate. There's also a neat link called 'switch,' which will switch your from and to languages.
Another interesting feature is the 'identify language' button, for when you know you want to translate it but you don't know what it is. When I tested it I discovered you had to use a critical mass of words; I couldn't just put in one phrase and get a language listing back.
Instructions for using the Wizard are available at http://www.faganfinder.com/translate/info.php . A list of sources drawn on by the Wizard is at http://www.faganfinder.com/translate/tool.php . "

ResearchBuzz! -- Search engine news and information.: "CNN Offers New News Alert Service
CNET is reporting ( http://news.com.com/2110-1025_3-5067839.html ) that CNN has added a news alert service. CNN already had a breaking news service, but this new one lets you choose news by keyword.
The new service is available at http://www.cnn.com/youralerts/ . You'll need to be a CNN
member to get the alerts. Registration for the news alerts is pretty extensive and includes address, month and year of birth, and gender. Once you've registered and confirmed your registration, you'll have the opportunity to put together alerts.
Alert setup consists of three boxes. The first specifies keywords that must be included in the article. The second specifies keywords which must not appear in the article (this is optional.) The third box allows you to name the alert. Underneath that you'll have the opportunity to edit your alert. Alerts come delivered in HTML by default. You can change that to text if you like. You can also specify delivery time (weekly, daily, or immediately) and site (currently only CNN and CNN Money are available.) "
